Horror-Thriller ‘The Silent Party’ Makes Its US Debut This Month

Argentina’s revenge horror-thriller The Silent Party is set to make its US and Canadian premiere this July following its worldwide film festival tour. From co-writer-directors Diego Fried and Federico Finkielstain comes the film starring Jazmin Stuart, Gerardo Romano, Eteban Bigliardi, Lautaro Bettoni, and Gaston Cocchiarale. Diego Fried, Nicolas Gueilburt, and Luz Orlando Brennan penned the script. In the film, “A few hours before celebrating her wedding at her father’s ranch, bride-to-be Laura (Jazmin Stuart) goes for a walk alone and stumbles upon an unusual party at a young neighbor’s house. The music and the atmosphere take her away from her own tensions for a moment until a violent act drastically changes the course of the night. Movie Reviews: Chattanooga Film Festival Short Films “Cruise,” “Exo Sapien,” “Smile,” “Sucker,” and “Red Is the Color of Beauty” 

Cruise Once, many, many moons ago, I worked a temporary job at a call center, and it was the most soul-sucking employment I have ever experienced. Writer/director Samuel Rudykoff’s horror comedy Cruise ratchets up things to another level as his short sees employees at a scam cruise-contest call center lose their souls along with their lives if they don’t close calls successfully. Jake (Chad Andrews) and Mark (Simon Pond) both give it their best shot, with an unforgiving supervisor (Ray James) keeping a close watch. The performances are all super solid, and Rudykoff does a great job building suspense while delivering laughs. Exo Sapien South African science fiction suspenser Exo Sapien, written and helmed by Fried Barry director/cowriter James C. Less than five minutes into Jorge Grau’s 1974 terror tale, The Living Dead in the Manchester Morgue (or Let Sleeping Corpses Lie as it’s sometimes known) we get psychotronic imagery, mod motor-bike riding, full-frontal nudity, and excessive bongos… none of you know just how much this speaks to me… Brash (read: kind of douchey) artist/Richard Branson clone George (Django Kill… If You Live, Shoot!‘s Ray Lovelock), he of the motor-bike mentioned up yonder, is country bound to help his friends fix-up a house when his bike is smashed by Mini Cooper enthusiast Edna (Cristina Galbó), who in turn is heading out to visit her heroine-addicted sister, Katie (Jeannine Mestre)… who also lives in the ass-end of nowhere, which results in the duo becoming road buddies! Movie Reviews: Short Films “Girls Night In,” “Crimson Ties,” “Lamb,” and “Skin & Bone” (Tribeca Film Festival)

Girls Night In Director Alison Roberto’s horror comedy Girls Night In takes a satirical stab as it takes into consideration The Bechdel Test, which, according to https://bechdeltest.com, “is a simple test [about films] which names the following three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. ” This blast of a short film, with a clever screenplay by Landon LaRue, finds cautious, diabetic Becca (Jess Adams) and her outgoing friend Delaney (Skylar Benton) spending the evening over a bottle of what the latter insists is carb-free wine, when an intruder with deadly intentions invades the former’s home. As the girls attempt to shelter themselves in Becca’s bathroom and call 911 for help, the absurdity kicks in. Adams and Benton are obviously having a lot of fun in their roles. Shudder has just announced the premiere date for the haunting South African psychological horror film Good Madam. The film, from writer-director Jenna Cato Bass (Flatland, High Fantasy) and co-writer Babalwa Baartman, centers on Tsidi, a single mother, who is forced to move in with her estranged mother, Mavis, a live-in domestic worker caring obsessively for her catatonic white ‘Madam’ in an affluent Cape Town suburb. However, as Tsidi tries to heal her family, a sinister specter begins to stir. Good Madam explores the generational trauma inherent to South African culture, sprawling from the past to the present day, with chilling delivery and haunting results. Movie Review: “Family Dinner” (Tribeca Festival) 

Austrian horror film Family Dinner serves up characters and situations that haunt long after the ending credits roll. Wonderfully acted, grim, and unsettling, writer/director Peter Hengl’s debut big-screen feature does a fine job of getting under the skin of viewers. Simi (Nina Katlein) is an overweight teenager who visits her Aunt Claudia (Pia Hierzegger), a published cookbook author and authority on nutrition, in the hopes of losing some weight. Her visit is met with a cool welcome, and she is told that she must leave in a few days, before Claudia, her new husband Stefan (Michael Pink), and Claudia’s son from her first marriage, Filipp (Alexander Sledik), celebrate Easter. Simi must room with Filipp, and his despisal of her is clear from the beginning. He taunts her by showing off his torso, and his relationship with his mother and new stepfather is also highly strained. A balding middle-aged dude bangs a woman way out of his league before dying with Shrek’s wife’s name on his lips. So begins José Ramón Larraz (Vampyres… and credited here as Joseph Braunstein) 1982 erotic occult shocker Black Candles, or as it’s also known; Los ritos sexuales del diablo… but the blu-ray refers to it as Hot Fantasies, so who the fuck knows… Anyhow, Carol (Vanessa Hidalgo) arrives in London to stay with the aforementioned Fiona (Helga Liné) upon the death of her brother (ol’ mid-life crisis referenced up yonder), and upon arrival sees evidence of all manner of occult-biz and groovy art, which wasn’t like her bro at all… except apparently it was! See this dread dwelling is packed to the terror tits with a Satanic cult lead by local (un)holy man Reverend Hübner (Manuel Gómez-Álvarez) and before long, our heroine begins fucking and having fucking nightmares (but mostly nightmares about fucking) and believe you me shit is going
