Blu-ray Review: The Daimajin Trilogy (1966)

A giant samurai statue goes a-rompin’ and a-stompin’ in The Daimajin Trilogy, a new box-set release covering Daiei’s classic kaiju creation courtesy of the sexy devils over at Arrow Video (along with MVD Entertainment)! First up comes 1966’s Daimajin: In medieval Japan, peasants cower in fear as the Earth trembles. These rustic folk believe that this is the result of a giant imprisoned within a nearby mountain attempting to make a jailbreak somewhere in this town (they are right btw)… As that is going on, the samurai lord of the village falls victim to samurai treachery, which causes his children to flee deep into the wicked woods that surround the village. They soon find themselves at the shrine of that aforementioned giant, the god Daimajin (played to perfection by Chikara “Riki” Hashimoto who would essay the role for the entire series); a huge-ass solid stone samurai that proves that in this particular village a hard man is indeed good to

Movie Reviews (Popcorn Frights 2021): “Ditched,” “Take Back the Night,” and “Pretty Boy”

Ditched From its opening sequence to its jaw-dropping climax, writer/director Christopher Donaldson’s Canadian feature Ditched is one wild swerve after another. Paramedic Melina (Marika Sila) comes to and finds herself in an overturned ambulance with memory loss from a concussion. A man strapped to a gurney (Kris Loranger as Franson) is also awake. As Melina tries to make sense of what happened before she blacked out, she finds other people both alive and dead around the rural, isolated scene — and then something hairy and dangerous makes its presence known. Giving away more than that would be heading into spoiler territory, but suffice it to say that what I have described happens very early on in the film, and plenty more is in store for viewers. Donaldson skillfully peels back layers while planting seeds for further mystery, and keeps the suspense at a hand-wringing pace. The members of the sizable cast give solid performances, especially Sila as a confused, scared,

Neil Marshall Unleashes Half Human Monsters In His New Horror Thriller ‘The Lair’

Jonathan Howard (Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World, Skylines, Warner Bros.’ Godzilla King of Monsters), Charlotte Kirk (The Reckoning, Warner Bros.’ Oceans Eight), and Jamie Bamber (UMC’s “Battlestar Galactica,” Cinemax’s “Strike Back,” 20th Century Fox’s Money) are set to star in the new horror-action-thriller The Lair written and directed by legendary filmmaker Neil Marshall (20th Century Fox’s Dog Soldiers, Lionsgate’s The Descent, The Reckoning, HBO’s “Game Of Thrones”). In the film, “Sergeant Tom Hook is tasked with leading a command to find Lt. Kate Sinclair, a Royal Air Force fighter pilot shot down in Afghanistan. Sinclair, pursued by insurgents, finds refuge in a long-abandoned secret bunker and unwittingly releases a deadly man-made biological weapon – half-human, half-alien, and hungry for human flesh – the Ravagers. Hook and his team, accompanied by a handful of British SAS troops must save Sinclair from the insurgents, and more importantly from the Ravagers before they overrun the area and potentially the world. Movie Review: Werewolves Within (2021)

My dude Finn (Sam Richardson) has just taken on the role of forest ranger in Beaverfield… a rural town crucial to the plans of Sam Parker (Wayne Duvall), an oil tycoon that wants to run his pipe straight through B-field’s sweet spot! This has the populace at odds and on edge, and an encroaching storm and a growing number of dead bodies aren’t helping matters. Soon Finn and local mail-person Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) are balls deep in the murder biz as they try and suss out just who… or more precisely, what… is behind these savage attacks! I’ll say one thing about Werewolves Within… it sure as shit has a literal ass-load of heart! Every character, even the real shit-heels are presented as pretty damn likable… or ridiculous… or an unholy combination of the two, and the actors present truly give it everything they have (special shout out to leads Richardson and Vayntrub who have undeniable chemistry and miles of

Movie Review: Gaia

Eco horror, body horror, creature feature elements — South African chiller Gaia has all this, and more. It’s an intelligent, macabrely beautiful-looking head trip of a film. Park rangers Gabi (Monique Rockman) and Winston (Anthony Oseyemi) are working in the Tsitsikamma forest, floating down a river, when Gabi’s drone goes dead after she spots something unusual. Gabi goes on land to investigate but falls victim to a trap. She seeks shelter in a cabin and later meets its residents — a middle-aged man named Barend (Carel Nel) and younger adult man Stefan (Alex van Dyk) who have given up civilization for a minimalist, survivalist life deep in the forest. As the separated rangers learn, something deadly lurks in the forest in the way of mutated entities, two-legged creatures that have been overtaken by flowers, foliage, and fungi. And Barend and Stefan are all too familiar with them. Director Jaco Bouwer, working from a remarkable screenplay by Tertius Kapp, has crafted

Filming is taking place in Bowen in The Whitsundays, the region off of Papua New Guinea with its gorgeous landscape and reefs serving as the backdrop for the character’s thrilling fight for survival against nature’s ultimate predator. Andrew Traucki said, “I’m thrilled The Reef: Stalked is in production and back to Bowen where we shot parts of The Reef eleven years ago! As a lover of survival tales, there is nothing I enjoy more than storytelling that pits

Blu-ray Review: King Kong (1976)

Fred Wilson (played to the scenery chewing ultimate by the late Charles Grodin), an executive douche-nozzle of the Petrox Oil Company, believes a mysterious and uncharted island, surrounded by a permanent bank of thick-ass fog (official meteorologist lingo), may be the source of a huge oil deposit, and sets sail with a full crew at his disposal. But alas, the crew is not all that’s aboard, as primate paleontologist Jack Prescott (a mega-laid back Jeff Bridges… yes, I know that’s can go without saying… ) has stowed away on the vessel, and he has all manner of historical accounts of the island they are heading to es no bueno… oh, and that fog mentioned up yonder may be caused by the breath of a giant creature. As if that weren’t enough in the uninvited guests department, the ship also picks up a castaway, an actress named Dwan (don’t ask, it’s fuckin’ stupid… oh and she’s played by the ever-awesome Jessica
