Blu-ray Release: Dark Shadows and Beyond: the Jonathan Frid Story (2021)

You lot know I love me some Dark Shadows; Dan Curtis’ ground-breaking 1960’s soap opera filled to the brim with Gothic atmosphere, witches, werewolves, and of course vampires, and it’s with that last denizen of the creature feature that the series featured it’s most enduring icon, the undead Lord of Collinwood, Barnabas Collins… played by to suave perfection by Jonathan Frid… speaking of which… Dark Shadows and Beyond: the Jonathan Frid Story, the new Blu-ray documentary release from MPI Pictures will either delight you with tales of showbiz and theater, or aggravate you if you want to know the man himself. What this film does right is explores in great detail the entire breadth of Frid’s work, from stage, to television, to movies, and back again; the man was an impressive actor with dozens of memorable performances under his belt before he even slipped in those enamel canines and set about putting the bite on Collinsport, Maine. Of course much

Movie Reviews: “Night Caller” and “Crabs!” (Another Hole in the Head Film Festival)

Movie Reviews: “Night Caller” and “Crabs!” (Another Hole in the Head Film Festival)

Night Caller You’ll probably feel like you need a shower after viewing writer/director Chad Ferrin’s Night Caller. This paean to grindhouse gorefests oozes a 1970s vibe from practically every frame. The film is lurid in both senses of that word, from its color palette to its graphic violence. It pays obvious homage to Maniac (1980) with its killer’s method of murdering and scalping victims as it name checks — with video clips — psychic horror of the past such as Patrick (1978) and some public domain fear fare, with some spaghetti western and Laurel and Hardy references, as well. Clementine Carter (Susan Priver) works as a telephone psychic with boss Jade Mei (Bai Ling) when she begins receiving calls from a serial killer, whose upcoming acts of violence she sees in visions as they talk. As Clementine tries to solve the mystery of just who the fiend is, she brings danger closer to her elderly father (Robert Miano as Charles

Movie Reviews (Blood in the Snow Film Festival): Horror Shorts — Giant Bear, Wolf in Dude’s Clothing, and Mummering Legends

Canada’s Blood in the Snow Film Festival, which runs in Toronto from November 18–23, 2021, features a jaw-dropping array of homegrown horror and horror-comedy features and shorts. Following are reviews of three of the short films that screen at the festival. Giant Bear Giant Bear (Canada, 2019) is a beautifully animated vision of an Inuit legend that is absolutely stunning. Codirectors Neil Christopher and Daniel Gies have crafted an absolutely gorgeous work. As beautiful as the snowy landscape is, the underwater world in the short is breathtaking. A lone hunter tries spearfishing with his dog, only to come face to face with a monstrously large bear. Much more than just an animated creature feature, Giant Bear is a riveting experience. Wolf in Dude’s Clothing Writer/director Solmund MacPherson’s Wolf in Dude’s Clothing (Canada, 2021) sees a wolf assume a human lifestyle after finding a suit of human skin in the wild. The wolf-man (Erik Athavale) — a fun play on the

Blu-ray Review: Frankenstein’s Daughter (1958)

Blu-ray Review: Frankenstein’s Daughter (1958)

Trudy Morton (Sandra Knight) is having some real horror humdinger nightmares in which she pictures herself as a monster out on the town, but it certainly won’t stand in the way of a good game of tennis… as it shouldn’t. The gaggle of Grease cast members she calls friends think it’s all a load of bullshit, except for Trudy’s frenemy Suzie (Sally Todd), who experienced the same “dream”. As fate would have it, the elderly scientist uncle Trudy lives with, Carter Morgan (Felix Maurice Locher) by name, has a real douchebag of a lab assistant; the rude-as-fuck, Felix Flankin lookin’ motherfucker Oliver Frank (Donald Murphy)… short for Frankenstein ‘natch… who is working a side-hustle in the lab; making a “female” creature out of random body-parts (no surprise given Oliver’s family history) while Carter aims to eliminate all disease in the world. Oh, and Oliver has been spiking Trudy’s daily fruit punch with a formula that turns her into a scantily

DVD Review: The Amityville Moon (2021)

DVD Review: The Amityville Moon (2021)

Down Amityville way, professional fuck-up Detective Kimball (Trey McCurley) takes the “Light Duty Highway” and is assigned to investigate missing woman at a church-run rehabilitation facility for wayward women. While there he meets the rag-tag denizens of that haunted half-way house, including new girl Mandy (genre mainstay Augie Duke), who is having none of this dreaded domicile’s bullshit… bullshit that includes an escalating number of missing persons. Now, just who is responsible for these vanishing acts? Could it be low-key beard-meister Father Peter (David B. Meadows)? How about hissing pop-eyed Sister Ruth (A nightmare on Elm Street 4’s Tuesday Knight)? Maybe professional papal weird-o Father Michael (Michael Cervantes)? Well whoever the fuck it is, it’s a hundo-P guarantee they are a mother fuckin’ werewolf! Speaking of werewolves… you know what always gets me about these particular creature features, the big transformation scene. If the person changing is anywhere in the proximity of another, non-werewolf type of person, then said non-werewolf

Movie Review (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival): The Monsters Without

Writer/director Randal Kamradt’s The Monsters Without (Philippines, 2021) is an interesting creature feature affair. It leans more toward fantasy and adventure than horror, but monster movie fans will want to check this one out for the wide range of supernatural beasts from Philippine folklore on tap, including the rather well-known flying, baby-eating Manananggal. In the English-language The Monsters Without, yablo (monsters) are real, and an ancient entity called Nameless (voice of Nick Medina) has risen to return the other yablo to their home dimension, a move that also threatens humanity. A Philippines-based team of scientists and soldiers called P.H.A.S.E. is the only hope to thwart Nameless’ evil plan. When Nameless kidnaps group leader Setsuko’s (Christina Yr. Lim) newlywed husband Rommel Romero (Jake Macapagal) — second in command at P.H.A.S.E. — matters get personal, and Sesuko and her teammates put themselves in harm’s way to try to rescue Rommel and save the world. Kamradt shows a deft hand at both action

Blu-ray Review: Brotherhood of the Wolf – Collector’s Edition (2001)

Picture it, France, 1764 a giant beast stalks the lands of Gévaudan and gives zero fucks when it comes to eating women and children. Enter: the knight Grégoire de Fronsac, (Samuel Le Bihan), the royal naturalist of King Louis XV of France, and his Iroquois/Mohawk martial-artist companion Mani (Mark Dacascos, who’s been in a ton of great stuff, but you doubtless know him as the host of Iron Chef America) two dudes hellbent on figuring out the exact nature of the beast… a beast all who have glimpsed it swear is a giant wolf! While investigatin’, Fronsac gets the hot n’ hornies for comely Marianne de Morangias (Émilie Dequenne), the daughter of a local count… who just so happens to have a one-armed brother named Jean-François (Vincent Cassel); the victim of a lion attack and a big-time hunter/pain-in-the-ass in his own right. Oh, Fronsac also fucks an Italian, fortune telling prostitute named by Sylvia (Monica Bellucci)… Relationship Status: It’s complicated
