Movie Review: The Kindred (1987)

Ol’ scientist type John (David Allen Brooks) is having one hell of a shit day. Not only has his mother Amanda (Planet of the Apes‘ Kim Hunter), a scientist as well, been in the shittiest of health, but she is screaming all manner of shit about a brother John never knew he had (not before imploring him to destroy everything pertaining to her experiments). Speaking of “experiments”, the head of the lab where John toils away, Dr. Phillip Lloyd (Rod Steiger in a baffling choice of hairpiece) knows all about the things Amanda was cooking up in that lab of hers, and he’d do anything to posses it’s secrets… probably to add to the legions of monstrous murderous mutants he keeps in a secret prison. So anyway, John, his girlfriend Sharon (Talia Balsam), a cadre of students, and a devotee of his mother’s work, Melissa Leftridge (Max Headroom‘s Amanda Pays… and yes, I know she was in the ’90s Flash

Filmmakers Adam Leader and Richard Oakes have a new dark, comedy-laced movie headed your way, Feed Me, which is inspired by the true story of the cannibal Armin Meiwes. Feed Me follows Jed, whose life is shattered when his wife suddenly dies and Jed feels directly responsible. Spiraling into an abyss of depression, he finds himself in a bar with a deranged cannibal, Lionel Flack convinces him he can redeem himself through the glorious act of allowing himself to be slowly eaten to death. Lionel Flack, Christopher Mulvin, Hannah Al Rashid, and Samantha Loxley star in the film. Kelli: “Ok. First, tell me how y’all got involved with this film?” Adam: “So we were on a, a shoot, I guess a, about a year and a half ago, we were shooting a music video for someone. And, I approached Rich with the idea about maybe writing a story based on the true story inspired by the true story of the

Movie Review: Bridge of the Doomed (2022)

Movie Review: Bridge of the Doomed (2022)

Bridge of the Doomed starts things off right with some straight up, red-blooded mother fuckin’ action (which differs from regular “action” by one “mother fuckin’”s worth, which trust me is a considerable amount) with zombies rippin’ an army base a new one! After that frightful fracas, ol’ General Vasquez (the always great Robert LaSardo) gathers up Lt. Whitmore (Dane Bingenheimer) and Sgt. Hernandez (Kate Watson) and charges them and their troops with the task of defending a nearby bridge until reinforcements arrive. Soon our heroes are squaring off against hostile human survivors of the outbreak and the ever advancing shambling dead… but what lurks under that beastly bridge may be the biggest danger of them all! I’ll tell you one thing, director Michael Su (Death Count) and screenwriter Adrian Milnes (Night of the Tommyknockers) make double damn sure that Bridge of the Doomed is never, ever boring… this picture is filled to the brutal brim with all manner of action,

Movie Reviews: FLOWING and THE WEIRD KIDZ (Brooklyn Horror Film Festival)

Movie Reviews: FLOWING and THE WEIRD KIDZ (Brooklyn Horror Film Festival)

Flowing Italian/Belgian coproduction Flowing (Piove, 2022)finds the city of Rome infected by steam that rises from the city’s manholes and through open drains in homes. The steam causes people to hallucinate and face their most negative emotions and darkest thoughts, driving them to violence. At the center of the story is the fractured family of father Thomas (Fabrizio Rongione) and his children, troubled teenage son Enrico (Francesco Gheghi), and young wheelchair-bound daughter Barbara (Aurora Menenti). Thomas blames Enrico for the automobile accident that claimed his wife’s life and crippled Barbara, and the father and son show open contempt for each other, so once that steam infects the pair, bad things are bound to happen. Director Paolo Strippoli invests his film, which won the Special Jury Mention Award at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, with a strong sense of dread throughout, and no small amount of goo and gunk to permeate the visuals. The family trauma and drama is presented in a

Blu-ray Review: Blood of the Chupacabras (2003)/Revenge of the Chupacabras (2005)

Plucky newspaperwoman Sandra (Elaine Benoit) works in an office of complete assholes who continuously ride her ass about the weak-as-fuck assignments the News Editor… a.k.a. her husband… doles out to her. Also the office scene is scored with the fartiest of electronic horn music your ass has ever heard… trust me, it’s a highlight… and it inexplicably shows up in the finale as well… One night Sandra gets a lucky break when her hubs assigns her to investigate a report of a local cryptid sighting of the famed goat-sucking Chupacabra which then turns to a homicide investigation across town… probably unrelated. As the attacks continue, Sandra seeks the advice of local Romany mystic The Mago (Lenore Sebastian), who you’d think would be more an expert in werewolves or vampires rather than Puerto Rican/Mexican cryptids, but she’s an infodump waiting to happen… she also recommends finding the local vampire hunter, one Granpa Charles Parker (Loren Taylor) by name, which is definitely

Movie Review: Freeze (H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)

Prolific fear-fare director Charlie Steeds’ latest effort Freeze (U.K., 2022) is a Lovecraftian creature feature that punches above the weight of its budgetary limitations, resulting in a solid-looking, highly entertaining period piece. The crew of the HMS Innsmouth is on a mission to rescue the HMS Eibon, which was lost during its expedition to the North Pole. HMS Innsmouth’s Captain Mortimer’s (Rory Wilson) good friend Captain Streiner (Tim Cartwright) commanded the lost ship, so he is determined to learn the fate of his friend. Meanwhile, Crewman Redgrave (Jake Watkins) helps hide a woman stowaway named Carmen (Beatrice Barillá), whose brother was an officer on the Eibon. Tension heightens when crewman Spriggs (Ricardo Freitas) (who you just can’t wait to see get his) learns of this. Mortimer’s first mate McCullough (Johnny Vivash) warns the captain that sailing any further ahead in the ice will result in disaster, but Lieutenant Roth (David Lenik), whose father owns HMS Innsmouth, persuades Streiner to forge

Blu-ray Review: They Crawl Beneath (2022)

Danny (Joseph Almani) is a policeman that spends most of his time poundin’ beers and workin’ on muscle cars with his grizzled uncle, Bill (the legendary Michael Paré of Eddie and the Cruisers and Streets of Fire)… when he isn’t busy having horrendous, monster-filled nightmares or fucking up his relationship with his girlfriend Gwen (Karlee Eldridge) six ways to Sunday. Fate however has more in store for Danny as an earthquake rocks the small desert town he calls home… an earthquake that releases toxic slugs that really take a shine to biting the townsfolk willy-nilly… including easy-breezy Bill! Anyhow, one additional quake later and Danny finds himself trapped under a muscle car with a very dead Bill and a very alive, and very toothy, mutated slug… which soon puts the bite on our hero which makes his already questionable chances of survival dip even lower! Will Danny be able to fend off those wicked worms and the haunting hallucinations their
