Movie Review: Invaders From Mars (1953) – Ignite Films Blu-ray

Junior astronomer Davey MacLean (Jimmy Hunt looking between 9 and 39 depending on the angle) is awakened one night by a thunderstorm only to witness a glowing green flying saucer land behind a large hill next to his house where it promptly sinks deep within the earth. The next morning David’s father, George (Leif Erickson in a performance that goes from lovable goof to violent, moody, secretive monster with shocking ease) heads out to investigate the hill, but comes back as a complete prickus, and soon David’s mother Mary (Hillary Brooke), his neighbor, the local constables, and more fall victim to the cosmic evil buried deep in the sand. Thankfully Dave has two erstwhile allies, Dr. Pat Blake (Helena Carter) and Dr. Stuart Kelston (Arthur Franz… who insists on pronouncing “mutants” as “mewt-ants”), and these cats manage to call in the military (thanks to the magic of stock footage) which leads to a full-scale operation being launched against those menacing

Shorts Reviews: EVERY HOUSE IS HAUNTED, WE FORGOT ABOUT THE ZOMBIES, and DEAD ENDERS (SXSW)

Every House Is Haunted Maya (Kate Cobb) and her husband Danny (Kevin Bigley) move into a new house that their real estate agent said was haunted by friendly ghosts in writer/director Bryce McGuire’s short film Every House Is Haunted. Danny doesn’t think it’s a problem, but Maya is somewhat concerned. When he goes away on a business trip, she encounters the ghost of a boy (Emmanuel Wood) who died at age seven of carbon monoxide poisoning. After bonding with the ghost, he introduces her to others who inhabit the home. McGuire goes for something far deeper than mere shocks and starts in this thoughtful, sensitive exploration of a woman who has suffered a tragic loss. We Forgot About the Zombies Writer/director Chris McInroy’s frenetic horror comedy short We Forgot About the Zombies finds two friends, one of whom was bitten by a member of the living dead, taking temporary shelter in a place with bottles marked with “c–e,” with the

Sink Your Teeth Into The ‘Big Shark’ Trailer

Tommy Wiseau, the writer-director-producer of 2003’s cult classic The Room, described by many as “the worst movie ever made,” is back with the creature feature Big Shark, whose trailer has just arrived. It is wild, looking like a cross between a boxing movie and Sharknado without the tornadoes. Variety describes the plot: “Three firefighters – George, Patrick & Tim – must save New Orleans from a gigantic shark. Can New Orleans survive?” The large ensemble cast includes Erica Mary Gillheeney, Tommy Wiseau, Greg Sestro, Joseph Poliquin, Ashton Leigh, and Kaleb Naquin. Big Shark swims into select theaters on April 2, 2023.

Film Review: Appendage (SXSW)

Film Review: Appendage (SXSW)

Body horror and creature feature combine in writer/director Anna Zlokovic’s feature Appendage. Fueled by solid direction, fine performances, and fun special effects work, the film comes highly recommended for horror fans. Hannah (Hadley Robinson) is a fashion designer hoping to make it into the upcoming seasonal collection of her ill-mannered boss. She receives a great deal of support from her friend and colleague Esther (Kausar Mohammed) and her boyfriend Kaelin (Brandon Mychal Smith), but none from her own parents, who hold an incident from her high school years against her. As Hannah’s insecurities mount, she develops a growth in her side, springing from a birthmark — a growth with a face, that enjoys needling her about the things that already trouble her. As the appendage grows, Hannah seeks support from a group of others sharing her affliction, including Claudia (Emily Hamphsire), who has seemingly tamed her own appendage into a more submissive role. Appendage features some humorous moments but more

Film Review: In My Mother’s Skin (Sundance Film Festival)

Film Review: In My Mother’s Skin (Sundance Film Festival)

From its blood-soaked, batty beginning to its harrowing third act, writer/director Kenneth Dagatan’s dark fairy tale horror feature In My Mother’s Skin (Philippines/Singapore/Taiwan, 2023) is a masterful tale of terror. Tala (Felicity Kyle Napuli) is a young girl living in The Philippines at the end of World War II, when Japanese forces are still occupying the county. Her father has been accused of stealing gold from the Japanese and leaves to meet with American contacts. With barely any food to eat, Tala, her younger brother Bayani (James Mavie Estrella), and her mother Ligaya (Beauty Gonzalez) must fend for themselves, and as Ligaya grows ever sicker, times get desperate. Tala meets a fairy (Jasmine Curtis-Smith) in the nearby woods who offers to help with a cure for Ligaya’s ailment, but she says that Tala must make the decision as to whether to use it or not. As fright-fare fans might surmise, the fairy has a dark side and Tala’s decision to

Film Reviews: CRYPTID, THE CURSE, and MOJICA’S LAST CURSE (Another Hole in the Head Film Festival)

Cryptid Writer/director Brad Rego’s Cryptid is a nifty creature feature that serves up The X-Files vibes with a dash of Kolchak: The Night Stalker for good measure. Former big-city journalist Max (Nicholas Baroudi) is working as a freelance reporter for a small-town newspaper in Maine, relegated to high-school sports items while hoping for a story that he hopes will give him a break back to the big time. He may have stumbled on a potential item when he comes across an animal attack victim that Sheriff Murdoch (Chopper Bernet) has bad feelings about. Max gets his photojournalist coworker and buddy Harriet (Ellen Adair) involved, and soon enough the pair are on the trail of the titular beast. Rego has crafted a fun monster movie that follows and respects the rules of classic creature features and sports an impressive monster-suit design and great-looking practical effects and makeup. The chemistry between Baroudi and Adair is super, with their characters having a “Will
