Blu-ray Review: The Fly Collection (1958 – 1989)

Those magnificent bastards at Scream Factory have gone and done it; they’ve shoved every damn Fly flick into a boxed set, packed them with features, and set them loose to be lapped up by horror hounds everywhere… and I’m going to put a revoltin’ review on the whole shebang! Let’s kick things off with 1958’s The Fly… because that’s the first film in the series, and it would be stupid to do anything else… Andre Delambre (David Hedison) is flat as a pancake after being crushed to shit and back in a mechanical press, and his wife Helene (Patricia Owens) is the one responsible… but like an attention whore’s Facebook relationship status, it’s complicated. Fortunately we learn just how complicated as she recounts the strange events leading to Andre’s trip to the permanent press cycle to his brother Francois (Vincent Price, the one and only baby… ) and Police Inspector Charas (Herbert Marshall). You see ol’ Andy had been balls

DVD Review: Plaguers (2008)

The star-ship Pandora is hauling ass back to earth with an alien energy orb called Thanatos in tow. As fate would have it, their journey is interrupted by a distress signal from a craft that has been ransacked by space pirates (who enter the Pandora posing as the miniskirt and platform boots clad survivors themselves). The ruse doesn’t last long, and when push comes to shove Thanatos’ orb is cracked, and people start turning into zombie-like mutants. Before long the survivors are up to their asses in monsters and mayhem as they try and escape the interstellar hell in which they’ve found themselves! Plaguers is one hell of an independent gem, let me tell ya! Why does this flick succeed, well the reasons are numerous. For one, the cast is strong, with genre stalwart Steve Railsback (Lifeforce) turning in a solid (if derivative by necessity… more on that in a bit) performance, and Alexis Zibolis is strong as well as

Movie Reviews (Blood in the Snow Film Festival): Majic and Hunter’s Moon (both 2019)

Imagine slowly beginning to find out that almost every major conspiracy theory for the past several decades was not only true, but somehow connected to the Roswell crashed flying saucer incident. This is the reality that debunker, skeptic, and video blogger Pippa Bernwood (Paula Brancati) is beginning to have to take into consideration in the Canadian science-fiction chiller Majic. Initially an atheist who believes nothing without concrete evidence, she finds her world turning upside down after meeting with elderly Anderson (Richard Fitzpatrick), who claims to have worked for a secret agency during the Cold War. Though the man seems confused and disoriented at times, he weaves a fascinating, complex tale that intrigues Bernwood enough to continue meeting him. The more she goes down the rabbit hole, the more her view of reality gets distorted and baffling. Director Erin Berry, who cowrote the screenplay with David Pluscauskas, weaves a gripping tale that should be enthusiastically welcomed by lovers of such fare

Blu-ray Review: Werewolf in a Girl’s Dormitory (1961)

Along with new teacher Dr. Julian Olcott (Carl Schell)’s arrival at a school for delinquent girls comes a rash of werewolf related violence. Could our hero be the hairy-scary giving these troubled teens so much static? As the attacks continue we are introduced to a host of possible suspects, as well as a blackmail plot involving a lil’ of the ol’ teacher/student hanky as well as the panky. How do these elements relate to each other and will the werewolves reign of terror be stopped before the student body is used as a chew toy? The biggest problem with Werewolf in a Girl’s Dormitory is the title itself. Now, there is a girl’s dormitory for sure, and also a werewolf… but you know damn well that title suggests all manner of sexy-time adventures peppered with some good ol’ blood draining at the teeth and claws of a fur covered maniac… but this isn’t that picture. Rather we get a moody,

DVD Review: Prey

Toby (Logan Miller); trauma survivor and participant in the ‘Lost and Found Program’; a kind of therapy that places troubled youths on remote islands where they are encouraged to reflect on themselves and their troubles, soon finds he is being stalked by some sort of preternatural presence and it’s going to take a whole lotta doing to survive this retreat! Thankfully he is joined by Madeleine (Kristine Froseth); a young woman raised on the island by her explorer-type parents. This lethal lady has survival skills and is good with a bow and arrow… but, her mother is not what she seems, and Maddie may have a secret or two of her own. Along the way we learn tidbits of the horrendous history of the island as Toby struggles to keep the beast at bay. Good luck kiddo. So what does Prey have going for it? Well the narrative, while derivative of The Most Dangerous Game, is mostly well-paced, loaded with

Atlanta’s Buried Alive Film Festival Offers Witches, Werewolves, and Weirdness

The 2019 edition of Atlanta’s Buried Alive Film Festival is chock full of outstanding, outrageous horror features and shorts from around the world. The fest is scheduled for November 13–17 at 7 Stages Theatre. Following are the features that I am most looking forward to seeing, either for the first time or once again. My thoughts in italics follow the fest’s official descriptions for each film. Antrum: The Deadliest Movie Ever Made Dir. Michael Laicini and David Amito – USA – 95min Antrum, a feature length film shot in the late 1970’s, is cursed. In 1988, a movie theatre in Budapest that was screening the film burnt to the ground, killing the 56 people who were in attendance. This incident follows the inexplicable deaths of a number of film festival programmers that had received Antrum as a submission and died shortly after watching the film. These events culminated with a riot during an exhibition in San Francisco, after which the

Blu-ray Review: Ultra Q (1965)/Ultraman (1966)

As a kid, I was absolutely obsessed with Japanese creature features (still am, actually!) but there was only so much of that material available in my small mountain hometown. Occasionally my friends and I would trek to the nearest “big” city where there was a store that had all manner of import toys and magazines, and here is where my mania became even more intense as I wanted so badly to see some of the Far East flicks and shows mentioned in those petulant pages… and nowhere seemed to be kaiju ground zero more than the Ultra shows produced by Tsuburaya Productions, headed by man-in-suit wizard Eiji Tsuburaya! Anyway fast forward to like last week sometime, and those sexy devils at Mill Creek Entertainment have sent yours cruelly Blu-ray sets of the first two series set in the Ultra universe; 1965’s Ultra Q and 1966’s Ultraman! Let’s get balls deep in the Q to kick things off, shall we? Now
