Movie Review: High Moon (2018)

In the 1800’s Colt (Chad Michael Collins) sets about putting a murder on a posse of gun-slinging werewolves that murdered his wife, after which, he is promptly killed by a ninja…this is doubtless based on a true story. Flash forward to the modern day where a small town is being plagued by a rash of exhumed coffins devoid of corpses, which naturally is caused by those pesky aforementioned lycanthropes who have woken up and immediately went on a kill spree that resulted in a whole lot of dead bikers and our werewolves on wheels. Of course since that putrid posse have come barkin’ back from the grave, our rootin’ tootin’ hero follows suit and before long teams up with a comely widow (Chelsea Edmundson), a small-town sheriff with marital woes (Matthew Thompkins) and a crooked Mayor (Sean Patrick Flanery), to try and end the evil reign of those blood-crazed creatures! As you can surmise, High Moon is one over-the-top, comic

Director And Special Effects Master Joe Castro Talks About His Past And Present Projects In An Interview

Anyone who really knows me is aware that I love special effects, so of course, I was really excited when I found out that SFX master Joe Castro had agreed to speak with me. Joe is the man behind the effects in horror and sci-fi films like Blood Feast II, Bonehill Road, The Dawnseeker, and The Haunting of La Llorona. But he’s not only any a special effects master, he’s also the director that brought us the Terror Toons franchise, Xenophobia, and many more. Joe sat down with me to talk about how he fell in love with filmmaking and effects, as well as some of his projects, and his journey. Horror Fuel: “How did you come to realize that you wanted to work in special effects?” Joe: “Basically, when I was seven-years-old, I was being babysat by my father who worked on a ranch in Texas. My mother was away for the weekend. I had a real fondness for

The first official image is here from Alexandre Aja’s (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) creature/disaster film Crawl in which Kaya Scodelario has to fight to survive a natural disaster and one of natures deadliest creatures, alligators. Scodelario plays a young woman who, while struggling to save her father during a Category 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped inside a flooding house and fighting for her life against Florida’s most savage and feared predators. Barry Pepper, Ross Anderson, and Anson Boon are co-starring in the movie that is part creature feature, part horror, and part disaster movie. The first footage was screened at CinemaCon with viewers calling it “bloody and chaotic.” Produced by Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures, Crawl opens in theaters on July 12th. Movie Review: Shed (2019)

A group of friends gather in a cabin in the woods on Halloween. While you may think these gaggle of goofs would be fodder for some masked lunatic, they are instead stalked n’ slayed by a skin stealing monster that can steal their identities. David Axe (who penned The Theta Girl, which I reviewed right here) brings us a tale that is both grindhouse and social commentary with Shed. While on the surface this is a creature feature that contains a healthy dollop of what many of us love the most…namely buckets of blood and naked flesh, all wrapped up in with “cabin in the woods/slasher” tropes…this picture has a bit more on it’s mind. The aforementioned monster is female, but isn’t afraid to take on the persona of men and could be a veiled allegory to the experiences of trans people and male or female gender roles being fluid, and that’s a statement I can get behind. As a

Blu-ray Review: The Brain (1988)

Dr. Blake (the legendary David Gale) hosts a TV show called “Independent Thinkers”…which is an absurd title as in fact the self-help program is a mind controlling transmission that Blake creates with the help of an alien brain he has holed up in his Psychological Research Institute…and the broadcast is making teens do the ol’ murder/suicide bag like a mother-fucker! Enter teen trouble-maker Jim Majelewski (Tom Breznahan) and his gal-pal Janet (Cyndy Preston) who decide to stand-up to Blake and his star-born menace after Jim has a brief stay at PRI and discovers things aren’t as they appear…but will they have what it takes to end the machinations of that devious doc and his creepy cerebellum? Look, The Brain is a picture about a giant ambulatory, people-eating, demon-faced, alien brain…that should be the only sentence I need to type to make you lot go out and add this to your creepy collection immediately! Of course there is much more this

Blu-ray Review: Tarantula (1955)

Professor Gerald Deemer (Leo G. Carroll) is doing the dodgy science bag down Arizona way with the plan of increasing the world’s food supply via making shit large AF. Naturally being a reasonable and sane individual, one of the things the good doc has enlarged is a tarantula, because…well who the fuck knows really…I mean if I was trying to cure world hunger I’d enlarge like a steak or a banana or some shit, not a poisonous as balls eight legged killing machine, but I’m admittedly no doctor…unless it’s a doctor of love because then I got the PHd! So, where the hell was I? Oh yeah… Of course that tarantula gets loose and goes on a bovine based murder spree and soon it’s up to small town doctor Matt Hastings (John Agar), and Deemer’s comely assistant, Stephanie Clayton (Mara Corday), to attempt to save the town from that rapidly growing arachnid. Also a young Clint Eastwood takes pot shots

Short Film Review: ALIEN: 40th Anniversary Shorts (2019)

The original Alien film turns 40 this year, and the folks at 20th Century Fox and Tongal are set to give you six sinister servings of zippy xenomorph goodness (yeah, I stole this from my initial blurb…if it ain’t broke yo…) via a selection of sinister shorts that will be running from…well today, to April 26th with one new film premiering each week on IGN…but, me being me, I’m going to give you my opinion of each of these fright flicks right fuckin’ now! Premiering today (March 29th as of this writing) is ALIEN: Containment: A small group find themselves stranded in a deep space escape pod, and one of them has been contaminated by an alien organism. What follows is a tense lil’ take on the tried and true tropes of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None with an enjoyable science fiction twist. Written and Directed by Chris Reading, this is a solid little slice of sci-fi paranoia

Movie Review: Assassinaut

The ol’ President of Earth (Irene Santiago) drops some nukes to end an alien invasion which naturally results in some friendlies getting the all over suntan. So she pops off to an orbiting space station to rule from the sweet, sweet vacuum of space. Enter Sarah (Shannon Hutchinson), a science minded teen who gets chosen to visit the space station, along with smiley genius Brooke (Yael Haskal), sullen Charlie (Jasmina Parent), and pint-sized douche-nozzle boy Tom (Johnathan Newport)…all accompanied by their hard-ass overseer Commander (Vito Trigo). Before you can say “What could go wrong in this scenario?”, an assassin shots the Prez and sets of a time bomb forcing those aboard to jettison to the beautiful, yet hostile, forest planet below. Soon our youthful heroes are up to their noses in alien parasites, body horror, and hot buttered murder…okay, the murder is just regular murder… Holy hell boils n’ ghouls; Writer/Director Drew Bolduc has really delivered with Assassinaut! While deftly
