Movie Reviews: “Dawning” and Short Films “Kageboshi,” “Good Taste,” and “Dikit” (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival)

Movie Reviews: “Dawning” and Short Films “Kageboshi,” “Good Taste,” and “Dikit” (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival)

Dawning Young Min Kim makes his feature film directorial debut — he also wrote the screenplay — with Dawning, a psychological horror outing heavy on family drama. Haejin Park (Kim Ellis) may have physically left her home after her father’s suicide (shown in the film’s opening scenes) for a new life in New York, but the trauma of that memory still weighs heavily on her. She goes back to the California farm where she grew up to console her younger sister Soojin (Veronica Kim), who has just split up with her abusive boyfriend. There, dark secrets are uncovered and supernatural overtones are introduced. Writer/director Kim shows a deft hand at the helm, serving up some twists and turns that raise the suspense while addressing the scars that PTSD and trauma can cause. Although the dialogue is a bit stiff at times, Dawning looks great, boasts fine performances from its two leads, and leaves viewers with much to think about. Kageboshi

Blu-ray Review: The Halfway House (2004)

Blu-ray Review: The Halfway House (2004)

Things start off with that hot n’ heavy jogging action so popular with the youth of today before dovetailing into a naked sacrifice to a monster… so begins Kenneth J. Hall’s horror-comedy/creature-feature/softcore sex flick, The Halfway House! So about that jogger… well, she’s the sister of one Larissa Morgan (Janet Tracy Keijser) and she isn’t the type to take a missing sister lying down… unless she’s busy fucking a detective, one Dick Sheen (Shawn Savage) by name, to convince her to help her find her missing sib. Said investigation leads to our heroine going undercover at the local church-run halfway house for wayward “girls” lorded over by the stern Sister Cecilia (genre legend Mary Woronov of Roger Corman’s Death Race 2000 fame… and about a billion others), who by day keeps the ladies in line through a healthy dose of fear, and by night sacrifices anyone that tries to escape the house’s wicked walls to the tooth and tentacle heavy

Movie Review: “Allegoria” (Panic Fest)

Movie Review: “Allegoria” (Panic Fest)

Allegoria, the debut feature from writer/director Spider One, finds tortured artists and torturing artists alike. This anthology film is a dark dive into the psyches of musicians, painters, actors, and others and serves up a variety of horror elements. In the opening installment, acting teacher Robert Anderson Wright (John Ennis) demands that his students show him a monster. Ennis is pitch perfect as a hard-nosed instructor, giving an all-in performance that isn’t short on flying spittle. Next up, angry artist Marcus Muller (Bryce Johnson) gets inspiration for his latest painting from a decidedly dark source. Johnson invests Muller with the proper amount of pretentiousness and cynicism, and what he confronts is disturbingly realized. In the third segment — and probably the most viscerally brutal — screenwriter Eddie (Edward Hong) gets a lesson in crafting a slasher flick from an expert source (Adam Marcinowski). If it’s slasher action you crave, this section delivers. Next, sculptor Ivy (Scout Compton) volunteers to help

Three New Out Of This World Clips Released To Celebrate 'Moonfall's' Landing

Movie Review: Sci-Fi Disaster Movie ‘Moonfall’ Is A Bit Of A Disaster Itself

Ten years ago Patrick Wilson‘s (The Conjuring franchise) Brian Harper, an astronaut, was disgraced after claiming to see something strange in space. Now, Brian, along with Halle Berry’s Jocinda Fowler, and John Bradley’s JC. is the world’s only hope after the moon leaves its orbit, threatening the complete destruction of the earth in Moonfall. Directed by Roland Emmerich, who penned the script along with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, Moonfall is a part disaster movie and part sci-fi flick and features out-of-this-world special effects including everything from giant waves taking out cities, pieces of the moon pelting the world, and amazing outerspace structures. Here’s where the spoilers start. The reason the moon is out of orbit is that it isn’t made of rock as we believe. Instead, it is a superstructure built by the ancestors of man to find planets where they could resettle after a war with AI gone bad. Now, one of the giant, biomechanical creatures has found
