Drac (Jess Franco regular Howard Vernon, who’s appearance here proves my words, as this too is a Franco flick) is back, and he’s doing his fang bang schtick on ye local comely lasses… an action that really sticks in the ass of Dr. Jonathan Seward (Alberto Dalbés)… here filling the traditional Van Helsing role… so much so that he takes a carriage ride to Dracula’s castle and straight up stakes the mother sucker turning him into an ex-bat! Well, nightmare over… right? Wrong. Before the pillow is even cold, Dr. Frankenstein (Dennis Price, who would return to the role in Franco’s The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein a year later in 1973), and his unfortunately horny assistant Morpho (Luis Barboo) slide their asses on into the castle, and immediately reawaken the Doctor’s Monster (Fernando Bilbao) whom they’ve conveniently brought along. Listen Carefully (U.S., 2024) Writer/director/star Ryan Barton-Grimley’s feature Listen Carefully follows a harrowing night in the life of Assistant Bank Manager Andy (Barton-Grimley), and it’s an entertaining, sometimes head-scratching, ride. As Andy’s wife Allie (Simone Barton-Grimley) skeptically leaves her husband in charge of their baby for a girl’s night out with his promise that he will prioritize the wellbeing of their child ahead of his work from home, Andy’s job anxiety becomes the least of his worries after the baby is kidnapped. A mysterious voice (Ari Schneider, who costarred with with Ryan Barton-Grimley in the latter’s writing/directing feature Hawk and Rev: Vampire Slayers) on the other end of a baby monitor sends Andy on a wild quest to gather enough money — in an illicit, dangerous manner — for ransom. Chattanooga Film Festival Offers a Hybrid Eleventh Edition This Month

Chattanooga Film Festival (https://www.chattfilmfest.org/) celebrates its 11th edition with a hybrid edition, so you can catch either in-person screenings from June 21–23 or relax at home with a virtual version from June 21–28, 2024. The lineup is a cornucopia of fright fare and other genre-film offerings. Lots of amazing features are scheduled, from Swedish religious horror In the Name of God to Dutch high-strangeness documentary The UFOs of Soesterberg to the sumptuous French vampire film The Vourdalak, and beyond. I’ve had the good fortune to watch and review four of the fest’s features from previous festivals for Horror Fuel, all of which I can recommend for Chattanooga Film Festival viewing. ‘Blade’ Sinks Its Teeth into a New Writer and Release Date

Marvel‘s highly anticipated Blade reboot has long been trapped in development hell. The project has suffered another major setback, with director Yann Demange being the latest to exit, joining previous director Bassam Tariq, who departed earlier. This leaves the future of the vampire hunter shrouded in uncertainty. Blade‘s development has been plagued by multiple delays and obstacles at every turn, like the directorial changes, writer switch-ups, studio pauses, and rumors, which have kept fans in suspense. The screenplay has undergone numerous revisions by various writers, including Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Green. Currently, Marvel veteran Eric Pearson is now taking the reins. Despite rumors of involvement with Jurassic World, Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali remains attached to star as the vampire bloodsucker hunter. Let’s hope he doesn’t walk away, too, because, in our opinion, he’s perfect for the role. Marvel is reportedly determined to get Blade out in 2025.
