It’s October and that means it’s time to get into the spirit of the season, and obviously nothing gets you into the Halloween mood better than horror. Unfortunately when it comes to most live-action horror films, there’s only so much that can be done and shown, but thankfully of all things, Anime can cross the line with story, gore, and intriguing storytelling. So for every day this month, I’ll be featuring a unique Anime that fits the horror genre that you can most likely find on any streaming service. If you cross Attack on Titan with Train to Busan and top it off with Steampunk, what do you get? You get Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress!
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (2016) is a Steampunk dark fantasy that takes place in an alternative Japan that’s been besieged by strange zombie-like creatures called Kabane who were once people who became infected and a steel-like cage forms around their hearts. The story follows survivors escaping on a gigantic train fortress and their hope for survival is a pair of Kabaneri, people who are both human and Kabane.
As mentioned in the beginning, this 12 episode series is reminiscent of a lovechild between Train to Busan and Attack on Titan, and that’s actually not that bad!
